About Stewart & Calhoun
Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, Inc. was established in November of 1963. It was the vision of three men, Lehman Black, James Stewart and William Calhoun.
After a careful and extensive analysis of the Akron African American funeral market, these men concluded that there was a definite need for a “first class” African American operation in the Akron area. This finding would eventually give birth to Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, Inc.
In order to fill this need, the proposed funeral home would have to offer something not already available to the public. It was their opinion, that an elegant facility and professional staff could be the inroad needed to make the venture a success. From the beginning, first class facilities and professional service have been cornerstone philosophies of Stewart & Calhoun. In addition, Stewart & Calhoun has prided itself on its innovation. Stewart & Calhoun was the first funeral home to advertise on billboards. Since the establishment of the Funeral Home, Stewart & Calhoun has been the only Akron firm to boast a Metropolitan Flower Car as part of its rolling stock. In 1977 Stewart & Calhoun introduced the first six-door limousine to the Akron area. These philosophies coupled with incessant reinvestment into the business have proven sound practices which helped to make Stewart & Calhoun Akron’s African American funeral home of choice.
Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, Inc. entered into the next millennium upon a solid foundation and with the enthusiasm of a new generation, witnessed by the additions of J. Preston Stewart, son of James Stewart and W. Byron Calhoun, son of William Calhoun, as licensed directors. The community celebrated the idea of two sons following their father’s career paths and felt reassured that the Stewart & Calhoun commitment of first class, quality service would continue into the next generation.
