Softly and tenderly, the Father has called home his beloved. No matter how much we love her, God still loves her more and she is once again giving her best to the Master. Maggie Lou Murray was born March 6, 1923. She was raised by her grandparents, Haywood and Channie Bell Murray, to be a strong, God-fearing woman. Within her was a spirit of humility, honesty, and fairness. With these blessings, she raised 5 children and shared her love with grandchildren, great grandchildren and the friends of her children, as well as so many other relatives, co-workers and friends.
As a young girl she attended Union Academy in Columbus, Mississippi and was a graduate of Mary Holmes Junior College in West Point, MS where she became an elementary school teacher. She met and married Lonnie C. Poole and after the birth of their first child, they moved to Akron, Ohio, where together they would have 4 more children and run a successful barbershop and laundromat for more than 30 years. She was also employed by Georgia Carper’s Dress Shop, Polsky’s Dept. Store and Trans Ohio Savings Bank.
Although she was raised a Baptist in Mississippi, Maggie found her spiritual home at Wesley Temple AME Zion Church. She loved her church and showed it through the service she gave there. From club member to club president, from women’s day captain to Woman of the Year, from Sunday School mom to Sunday School Teacher. She loved teaching young people at Wesley Temple, and continued to attend Sunday School until her health declined. As one member stated in a recent call, ” Mrs. Poole is a fixture at Wesley Temple”. Mrs. Poole was very active in her community, having been active in school PTA’s, March of Dimes, and Girl & Boy Scouts. For many years, she served in the voting polls. Mrs. Poole was also a member of the NAACP and The Ardella Sewing Club.
