Henry Louis Jackson Sr. passed away, May 9, 2012. He was born to the late Fred and Finise Jackson on May 20, 1941 in Skeens, MI. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Freddie-Lee and brother, James Jackson.

In 1945, the family relocated to Akron, OH to take advantage of thriving industry opportunities and promise of a bright future. Henry grew up enjoying all kinds of sports, particularly excelling in Track and Field. He was affectionately known as the “quiet one” by his siblings.

Henry had many hobbies including bowling, piecing together puzzles, and tinkering with trains. His love of trains was a lifelong passion. He often traveled by train to take in the vast landscape of the country and to visit historic train stations.

Henry loved the Lord, and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He along with his family became members of Second Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Stanley E. Lynton. Henry participated in numerous church activities: serving as president of the Jr. Usher Bd., president of Northeast OH Convention, singing in the choirs, and playing the trumpet. His fondness of music would follow him throughout his life.

In later years, Henry served as a trustee and as a driver for the bus ministry. He took extra care of the seniors he transported to and from weekly church services. Second Baptist was home for Henry. He used his talent not only in church but the U. S. Army and Akron Police Department.

After serving in the military, he became a life member of the John Fulton post #272, of the American Legion. He served as the Post Bugler, the Summit County Bugler, and the City of Akron Police Department Bugler. He served four terms as the Commander of the post and was the current Commander up until the time of his passing. He always said “yes,” to a veteran’s request for “Taps” to be played at their service. He was devoted and committed to task.

Henry retired from Firestone Tire & Rubber Co after 18 years of service. He then embarked on his second career as a police officer with the City of Akron, retiring in 2006 after 19 years of service. Never one to remain idle, Henry returned to work as a school crossing guard. He looked forward to talking with and encouraging the children. Henry was a loving spirit and was loved by all who knew him.

He is survived by his devoted wife and friend, Victoria “Vicki” son Henry, daughters, Dionne and Brandy, and special son in law, Patrick Jordan, all of Akron, OH; loving siblings, Erbertine “Erbie” Badgett of Flower Mound, TX; Melvin “Jay” Jackson, of Akron, OH, Verdell (Gwen) Hall of Kennesaw, GA, and Vera Anderson of Akron, OH and host of other family and friends.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Second Baptist Church 44311. Rev. Larry Harris, eulogizing. Interment, Rosehill Burial Park. Friends may visit at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1163 Crestview Ave., Akron, OH 44320.
