Viola Wasson

Viola Wasson was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 28, 2012.  She was born in Ensley, Alabama on May 5, 1912 to Amanda and Henry Turner Jarvis.  She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband Stephen C. Wasson, and grandson Kevin Scott Johnson. 

Viola and Stephen Wasson and daughter Mary Elizabeth moved from Lynch, Kentucky to Akron, Ohio in 1944. She immediately joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church under pastor Rev. A. L. Dykes.  She remained a faithful, active member for 68 years having served as president of the Pastor’s Aide, president of Missionary Circle 3, and was often found serving in the church kitchen. 

Mrs. Wasson is survived by her daughter, Mary E. Johnson (Herbert, Sr.), grandson, Herbert Johnson, Jr. (Cheryl), Simpsonville, SC; and granddaughter Cynthia J. Brown, Akron, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Lauren Johnson Cummings (Maurice), Simpsonville, SC; Stephanie D. Johnson, Washington, DC; Eliot R. Brown, Akron, Ohio; Troy A. Brown, Akron, Ohio; great-great-grandchildren, Tai-Marie Dennis, Austin G. Cummings, and Olivia R. Cummings all of Simpsonville, SC.  She had two step-children, Claiborne Witt and Donald Wasson, of Cleveland, Ohio; and two favorite nieces, Bobbie Jean Davis and Harriet Shakir, both of Detroit, Michigan. 

Services will be held Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 327 Cuyahoga Street, Akron, OH, 44310.  Visitation begins at noon with the homegoing celebration services beginning at 1:00 p.m.  Rev. Dr. Luther Cooper officiating.  Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 899 Mark Dr, Akron, OH 44313
